Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal or gum disease is a pathological inflammatory condition of the gum and bone support (periodontal tissues) surrounding the teeth.

The two most common periodontal diseases are:

  • Gingivitis – inflammation of the gum at the necks of the teeth, and
  • Periodontitis – inflammation affecting the bone and tissues of the teeth.

Factors that can increase the risk of periodontal disease:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Increased age
  • Smoking
  • Genetics ie if your parents had gum disease you have an increased risk of gum disease
  • Stress
  • Certain medications
  • Poor nutrition and obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Hormonal changes eg due to pregnancy or menopause
  • Poor fitting dental restorations
  • Decreased immunity eg following chemotherapy

Treatment of Periodontal Disease

The removal of plaque and tartar(calculus) is necessary to establish periodontal health. The first step in the treatment of periodontitis involves cleaning below the gumline (Deep cleaning) with a procedure called root debridement. This procedure involves the use of special instruments to mechanically remove plaque and tartar from below the gumline, and may require multiple visits and local anesthesia to adequately complete.

Following treatment a complete tailor made hygiene regime is provided for you to ensure you can maintain plaque and tartar control at home.

Fillings

Silver (amalgam)
White (composite)

Tooth Whitening

Our home bleaching system is an excellent way to improve the appearance of your smile in a safe and effective manor. The great advantage of the home bleaching system is you have your bleach trays for life and to top up your bleaching in the future you can purchase individual tubes of bleach. The bleach we use is recommended under current EU legislation with regard to the % bleach that can be used.  Once we have checked your teeth and gums are disease free and suitable for tooth whitening, we take impressions. Custom made thin plastic trays are then made into which the bleach is placed and these are worn either over night or for 2-3 hours during the day/evening. The number of days that you will bleach for will depend on the current shade of your teeth. We will give you full instruction and demonstration at your bleach tray fit appointment.

Sportsguards

It is very important to wear a correctly made and fitting sportsguard when playing contact sports. Our sportguards are custom made so that they fit your teeth and gums perfectly giving them the best protection. Our sportsguards can be made in many colours including team colours.

Sedation

We understand for some attending a dental appointment can be a daunting thought. We will work with you to enable you to feel more comfortable about dental treatment. There are many techniques that will help with this along with the use of modern technology. For some people oral sedation can be of huge benefit to feeling less anxious and we are happy to provide oral sedation where appropriate.

Nightguard/Night Splint

This is a thin acrylic guard that is custom made to fit comfortably over your teeth. It is used where tooth grinding occurs at night. It prevents tooth on tooth wear and therefore protects the teeth. In some cases it will stop patients from grinding and this can ease TMJ (temporomandibular joint) and muscular discomfort.

Child Dental Health Check

  • Checking the general health of the baby and adult teeth
  • Checking the eruption pattern and development of the adult teeth
  • Ensuring the gums are healthy and providing full oral hygiene and diet instruction.
  • An assessment of the bite and position of the teeth will be done and any need for braces (orthodontics) will be discussed.

Hygiene Appointment

At your hygiene visit we provide a thorough cleaning (scaling) of all your teeth and a polish of all your teeth. This involves the removal of soft plaque and tartar (calculus) above the gumline.  Stain removal from smoking, tea/coffee is also provided. You will take away with you a tailor made care plan for your teeth and gums, with a knowledge of all the aids that can help you to achieve a healthy mouth. Not only is it important for your teeth and gums to have your mouth free from bacteria, it is also important for your heart.  Extensive research has now shown there is a link between periodontal (gum) disease and cardiovascular disease.

Emergency Treatment

We aim to see all emergencies at our earliest available appointment.

Fissure Sealants

Fissure sealants are an excellent way of helping to prevent decay in teeth. A white resin is placed in the grooves on the biting surfaces of the teeth which prevents food and bacteria from trapping there.  Fissure sealants are ideally placed as soon as the permanent back teeth erupt as the teeth are most likely to be nice and clean and stain free at this stage.

Extractions

The removal of teeth that are severely decayed, broken, loose, or causing crowding.

Crowns

A porcelain, or gold cover for a decayed, damaged, brittle, or discolored tooth that has a strong base and roots.

Veneers

A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain made to fit over the front surface of a tooth. A minimal preparation of the tooth surface needs to be done in order to place a veneer. They can vastly improve the appearance of for example, teeth that have become darkened due to trauma.

Dentures

A removable appliance (prosthesis) that replaces all of the missing teeth in either the upper or lower jaw. Usually made of acrylic or metal.

Bridges

A fixed appliance (prosthesis) that replaces missing teeth. A bridge is a series of crowns (abutments and pontics).

Inlay/Onlay

A laboratory processed restoration made of metal, acrylic, composite or porcelain.

Porcelain inlay/onlays are highly durable and highly aesthetic. They are particularly useful in replacing large old fillings.

Implants

Implants are an excellent replacement to your missing tooth/teeth.  An implant can appear and feel just like a natural tooth. Where a number of teeth are missing implants can be used to support a bridge or a denture. A small titanium screw is inserted into the jawbone by a specialist dentist. Once the implant is embedded firmly into the bone (osseointegration) an implant crown (the tooth like part) is placed onto the implant here at Clarinbridge Dental.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment (also called endodontics) is needed when the blood or nerve supply of the tooth is infected through decay or injury.  Pain, an abscess and/or a swelling may occur due to this infection of the nerve. Root canal treatment aims to remove this infection, therefore relieving pain and saving the tooth. This infected nerve(pulp tissue) is removed by cleaning the canals that run through the roots of the tooth, they are disinfected and filled back up to prevent further infection.

Specialist Referral

We have a highly skilled referral network. We can offer information and referrals to many dental specialities where appropriate. For example: Orthodontists, Oral Surgeons, Periodontists, Prosthodontists, Endodontists.
